Why does sex get boring in long-term partnerships?

What happens to your sex life after the honeymoon’s over? Did you ever wonder why long term relationships can sometimes lead to boring sex? And why do we need advice from therapists and sexologists (like me) to spice things up?

After the initial romantic stages of a relationship ends and the honeymoon is over, most couples enter into the maintenance stage of their relationship. This phase may mean that sex is nice, it works, and you like it, but it can at times be stale or even boring. You may eventually feel trapped in your routine.

You may both find that you fantasize about something a little more adventurous, but it can be hard to bring up a new idea or even a conversation about sex with your partner. Maybe you are both tired and don’t have the time or energy to act out a new fantasy. After all, the maintenance sex is good.
