Anybody who’s been reading my work for a while knows how I feel about Addyi, the FDA approved drug prescribed for women for ‘desire’ issues, called Flibanserin. In short, it’s both ineffective and could even be dangerous. I’m an advocate of lifestyle changes and communication to improve women’s desire for sex with their long-term partners, and I only suggest medication when it is clear that intervention is pharmacologically necessary. But Flibanserin would not be my first recommendation.
Check out my interview in DAME Magazine to find out how I feel about this drug.
I do recommend that all women considering a quick fix with Addyi read this list from Rachel Hills of the WashingtonPost: 6 things that would do more for women’s sex drive than ‘female Viagra’
The short summary:
She recommends more comprehensive sex education for all ages instead of a magic pill
She would like to see expanded training on sexuality for medical professionals – all doctors!!
How about teaching women to empower themselves to own their sexual pleasure
She wants to turn the focus of sex from orgasm to the a more exciting journey toward pleasure
And let’s encourage women with a ticking “biological clock” to freeze their eggs so they have the freedom to pursue sex and relationships for pleasure rather than procreation
Most importantly: Let’s remember what feminism is all about. If we destroy gender roles women will be free to express themselves fully and honestly, even in bed.
