Triad granted civil union in Brazil

A polyamorous triad has been given legal status as a recognized domestic partnership under Brazilian law. Two previous groups have applied for and received this recognition recently, so this marks the third group to have a civil union recognized in Brazil. Polyamory means “many loves” – a relationship where there are more than two partners in a committed partnership in an openly loving relationship, many times in one home.

Here’s the coverage from Poly in the News: And *another* civil union of three registers in Brazil.

This is not about legalizing multiple partners in one marriage, which is defined as polygamy. Each of the groups who have received recognition as a civil union are granted some of the rights typically provided to married couples, but not all of the rights. This movement forward for polyamorous groups is similar to when states first started offering civil unions for same sex couples – some of the same rights as marriage, but not all. They can think about sharing a child legally, having some financial rights and equity of property if they ever split up.

I wonder… will we soon see poly groups granted similar rights here in the US? What do you think?
