Who is They

People are increasingly giving themselves permission to explore the full extent of their sexual expression as well as their gender identity. This means that the existing binary of male/female, he/she doesn’t always fit. For transgender individuals as well as for non-binary gender fluid people there has been a call for a third choice of gender neutral pronouns.

In the past century many options have been suggested. “They” has gained most traction in popular usage.

But how do gender neutral pronouns work? If the concept is confusing, it’s understandable and this guide has some good advice. The main thing to remember is that you can’t tell someone’s gender identity by looking at them. Ask and listen to what that person’s preference is, and then do your best to adhere to it.
