S&M, or sadomasochism, is now known as BDSM which includes sexual activity such as discipline, bondage, submission, domination, sadism and masochism. Surprisingly, 55 percent of women and 50 percent of men experience sexual pleasure through pain, according to a Kinsey Institute study. Physiologically, pain and pleasure centers of the brain are closely related, so it’s natural for both to be activated during sex. Another reason for the popularity of BDSM is the opportunity it provides for shifting power rules. Experimentation with your partner is important, as is trust and an agreement on a “safe word” for when it’s time to stop.
