Confronting our partner is never easy, but according to Jan Stevens, it can be a very good way to bring up issues. The intention and approach are key and confrontation “should never be done with the purpose to destroy…do it in a way that brings reconciliation and understanding.” The truth doesn’t necessarily have to be destructive, and in fact, can have the opposite effect. Another reason we avoid confrontation is because we don’t think our partner can handle it, but Stevens says not to underestimate our partner’s ability. Healthy confrontation can lead to more trust and less fear in a relationship.
