Emotional Affairs: The Worst Kind of Heartbreak

Would you rather find out your partner was having an emotional affair or a sexual relationship? Therapist Jan Stevens says the emotional affair may be considered more forgivable, but is actually the most damaging. When people share feelings, secrets and problems with each other, this creates emotional intimacy which can lead to falling in love and physical intimacy. Knowing your partner is in love with someone else can cause you to question your self-worth, leading to a crisis in confidence. Stevens believes the fallout is different with a purely sexual affair, and that emotional affairs are “the worst kind of heartbreak.”
