Actress Stacey Nelkin asks, “Why do we still have these crazy expectations that our spouses will be faithful?” Citing the ways traditional relationships have evolved including same-sex marriage, the ability to connect with partners from our past and the fact that few who marry for the first time are virgins, Nelkin says monogamy is an unrealistic requirement for marriage. She compares the American view of marriage with that of Europeans, noting that many French couples are now choosing civil unions over marriage, and that the divorce rate in France is much lower than ours. Nelkin suggests being open to the possibilities.
