Hayley Rose Horzepa believes rape is not about sex, but about control. “It is a crime like any other where something is taken without consent,” she says. Writing of her own experience with rape, Horzepa reflects on the difficulty she has with trust; not just with others, including family and friends, but also trusting herself. In her experience, some people have a difficult time providing support once they learn she was a victim of rape. This makes her reluctant to depend on people and to trust her own instincts. Horzepa acknowledges her emotional difficulties, and appreciates her true friends.
