You may be surprised to learn that in most cases, sex addiction therapists recommend a year of treatment before deciding whether to leave your sex-addicted spouse. Virginia Gilbert, MFT, says if true commitment is present on both sides, “…the marriage could actually be transformed into a real union marked by genuine intimacy and integrity.” Both the addict and the co-addict have a lot to do, however. Commitment to recovery and treatment is critical, as are disclosure and abstinence for the addict, and personal goal setting on the part of the co-addict. Taking some time can lead to empowerment and growth.
