Sexual and emotional abuse affects development of the brain in different ways

The human brain is a fascinatingly complex organ, as evidenced by new research published in American Journal of Psychiatry . Sexual and emotional abuse affect our brain’s development and this complex organ can become permanent scarred, affecting emotional regulation and self-awareness. This change in the brain can also create a shift in the way we experience sensory input from our genitals. This research helps to link specific types of abuse with the symptoms experienced by survivors into adulthood. This neurological research will encourage and guide further study so that we can pinpoint accurate and beneficial therapy techniques to help survivors cope and normalize what they are experiencing.
