Wedding season is almost upon us. Will you be tying the knot? If so, I’m sure you’re receiving tons of advice. But there are several things that people don’t typically tell the soon-to-be-married.
I was interviewed recently by Wedding Wire and asked what I think are five things no one tells you about your first year of marriage.
The quote they used was the fifth on my list (see below). Here’s the rest of what I told them.
#1: Living Together is Wonderful
No one tells you that you will absolutely love living with the person that you marry.
Sure, everyone says that it is a big adjustment, and it is. And that you will fight about the toothpaste, and you will.
But it’s also amazing to wake up every day with the one person who you most want to spend time with, more than anyone in the world, and snuggle in bed with every night.
Totally worth every argument about the toothpaste.
#2: Newlyweds Are Like College Freshmen
No tells you that the first year of marriage is like the first year of college.
You gain about fifteen pounds and you don’t even care. You get to eat the third piece of pizza, and stop caring how many calories are in your bread.
You finally get to be yourself and eat ice cream on the couch and your spouse still loves you and thinks you’re hot.
(Note: this only works the first year of marriage. Then you have to get out there and go back to the gym.)
#3: All Other Friends Pale in Comparison
No one tells you that you are going to literally give up all your friends. The first year of marriage is the cocoon time.
You don’t want to go out. You don’t want to hang out with your buddies anymore. Who cares if they drift away?
You have your best friend right here at home and there is nowhere else you would rather be.
#4: Newly Married Sex is the Best Sex
The first year of your marriage is the best sex of your life. Enjoy it, relish it. Lay around naked all weekend long.
The first year goes by fast.
#5: Everyone Will Be Jealous
The first year of marriage, you will make your friends, your co-workers, your family and all of your neighbors jealous.
Check out what I said in WeddingWire about how to deal with this issue.
The first year of marriage is an incredibly magical time. Cherish it, revel in it, and don’t let the haters get you down.
