Are Kids Getting Their Sex Ed from Porn?

Are Kids Getting Sex Ed From Porn - Dr. Tammy Nelson blog

Porn has been vilified for decades as a destroyer of marriages, an addictive drug, and a quick way to ruin a good sex life by destroying your once pure fantasy life. And with the rise of internet porn, the idea that it is somehow “perilous to our health and happiness” has only grown, at least in some circles. But if you talk to people who work in or report on the industry, the reality seems to be much different.

Does Porn Make People More Perverse?

Lux Alptraum shared her experience as an editor of the porn blog, Fleshbot. She said that most people seem to visit porn sites to indulge in content that meets their own already-established sexual preferences. People rarely change what they’re interested in simply by being exposed to it.

Porn as Sex Ed

The one exception is the young people who consume porn. Many of them have not had a chance to develop their own sexual preferences and porn can give them unrealistic ideas of what’s possible and what may be desirable.

I agree with Lux:

“We need to stop treating sex as a taboo topic, and start treating it as an ordinary aspect of life, one that young people should be educated about in all its weird, wonderful, risky and rewarding complexity. If we create a culture where sexuality is accepted as a healthy, positive part of life, then we’ll be able to appreciate porn for the wild, unrealistic fantasy that it was always intended to be.”

What Do You Think?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the topic:

  1. Do you think porn is inherently dangerous?

  2. Can porn destroy a normal sex life?

  3. Do you believe that porn has a place?

  4. Where should kids get their sex ed, if not from porn?
